Albergo Del Viaggiatore, Assisi
Located in the ancient, hilltop city of Assisi in the region of Umbria, the Albergo Del Viaggiatore is delightful two-star accommodation in the centre of the city's historic old town. On a quiet street just next to the city's Piazza Vescovado, this beautiful old hotel retains much of its original interior stone walls, arches and brick-vaulted ceilings.
The ensuite rooms are comfortable with all the necessary amenities: minibar, bathroom, satellite TV, air conditioning, telephone, work desk and hairdryer. The restaurant, which seats up to 80 guests, offers traditional regional dishes with a large choice of local wines all accompanied by local medieval music. It is also possible to arrange private lunches and dinners in one of the three little dining rooms. Perfectly positioned for sightseeing, the hotel's central position means the city's most popular attractions are within walking distance. In the 11th century St Francis of Assisi established the Franciscan brotherhood and one of the city's most famous attractions, St Francis's Basilica, completed in 1253, is full of stunning frescos and the crypt is St Francis's burial place. The cathedral of St Rufino boasts a Romanesque facade with three beautiful rose windows and a 16th century interior.
As well as the city's many attractions, including many ancient Roman remains such as the city walls, amphitheatre, forum and Temple of Minerva, the hotel can arrange excursions into the mountainous Umbrian countryside and to nearby cities such as Perugia. The nearest airports are in Rome, Milan and Florence.
