This canal was the main entrance into the city in the days before the railway ran out to Venice (Venezia), and Cannaregio is marvellously well placed for visitors to this magical city - the hotel is just five minutes from the railway station. You are only 20 minutes from Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square with its Basilica), 15 minutes from the Rialto and five minutes from the Venetian Casino.

And the sestiere (literally 'one sixth') of Cannaregio has much to offer nearby. This historic district arose from the Lagoon in the eleventh century, the second of Venice's six districts, and was traditionally a working class area. Nearby you'll find the Jewish Ghetto (the first in Europe and which gave the word 'ghetto' to the English language); there is the Ca d'Oro, Sacca della Misericordia, and historic churches such as Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria Assunta. And as you head out to explore, either by canal (on the gondolas or vaporetti) or on foot) you will find enough to fill a dozen vacations. There is the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the superb Ca'Rezzonico (a palazzo sitting on the Grand Canal, now transformed into a public museum exploring and explaining old Venice).
