Borgo Palace Hotel, near Arezzo

The Borgo Palace Hotel lies 3km out of the historic centre of Sansepolcro, in Tuscany's Arezzo province. This is a modern four-star hotel, equally tailored to holiday or business visitors, with a quiet ambience and well appointed meeting rooms. Nearby towns and villages include Arezzo, Monterchi, Caprese Michelangelo and Anghiari.

Rooms are singles, doubles or junior suites. All are air conditioned, with minibar, bathroom with shower and WC, phone, TV and balcony. The hotel has the excellent Il Borghetto gourmet restaurant (already earning write-ups in some of the more important Italian restaurant guides), there is a buffet breakfast each morning, and the front desk is open 24 hours for anything you require. The hotel has free parking and internet access.

You have lovely countryside to explore here, being close to the elegant patchwork fields, serried vineyards and olive groves and lines of cypresses that make up the Chianti area. There is the historic hill town of Arezzo nearby, and numerous other pretty hill towns and villages, many medieval in flavour and architecture, but some much older - Arezzo can trace its history back to the Etruscan civilisation of more than 2500 years ago. And don't overlook nearby Sansepolcro. Set on the River Tiber, its main claim to fame today is that it's the home of Buitoni but more interestingly, it was the birthplace of mathematician Luca Pacioli, the 15th century Franciscan friar and ace mathematician - the man who taught maths to Leonardo da Vinci. Another son is Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. His Resurrection hangs in the museum here, described by Aldous Huxley as 'the greatest painting in the world'.
