A superb four-star hotel in the heart of the old town, the Cavaliere Palace Hotel is on Via Madonna Del Prato, just 100 metres from the railway station and close to the main historical sights. The hotel, a former boarding house, has now been artfully transformed into a comfortable modern hotel, with restaurant, bar, garages (pay) and a breakfast room. Rooms here are singles or doubles. Arezzo was a city under the Romans and the earlier Etruscan civilisation, though its flavour now is resolutely medieval. It sits atop a hill above the Valdarno (Arno river valley) far below. There are a dozen must-sees in Arezzo, but the one everyone knows is the superb fresco cycle by Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, in the church of San Francesco. See too the church of Santa Maria della Pieve, the Episcopal Palace, the House of Petrarch (a native of the town) and the Fortezza Medici. Notable festivals in the town include the Giostra dei Saracino and Arezzo Wave, each July. Arezzo is also noted for its antique shops and markets.
