Back in town, Ravenna has numerous memorials to its grand past, as capital of the Western Roman Empire from the year 402AD. That was when Emperor Honorius, dismayed by the incursions of the Goths into his domain, swiftly relocated from Milan to this obscure marshland spot. The legacy is a clutch of superb early Christian buildings. Eight of these are on the World Heritage List, including the Neonian Baptistery and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. There are two fifth century churches, some excellent medieval places of worship and the 10th century St Francis' Basilica. Get a good guidebook and head out to explore from your Ravenna hotel. The city also has Dante's tomb, and the town is centred on the Piazza del Popolo, beautifully laid out by the Venetians in the 15th century.
