D'Angelo Palace Hotel, Mazara del Vallo

This modern three-star hotel is in the picturesque town of Mazara del Vallo, on the western coast of Sicily and the white sandy beach of Tonnarella is within easy walking distance. So is the city itself: Mazara del Vallo was one of Sicily's principal Saracen strongholds and its historic centre, with its narrow streets and little courtyards and alleys has something of the casbah about it still, reminding visitors of its Arabic past. You may even find the odd hammam, or Turkish bath. There are Norman elements too, particularly the Duomo (although much of the current cathedral is 17th century) and the churches of San Nicolo Regale and the Madonna dell'Alto. The D'Angelo Palace Hotel would also make a good base for those wanting to explore the haunting ruins that fill this area - the ancient site at Selinunte, for example, with its evocative temple remains, would make an excellent day trip.

The hotel is in a five-floor modern building, and the restaurant at the top offers panoramic views as well as the delicious local Sicilian cuisine. But although you'll find every modern convenience here - the rooms have air-conditioning, direct dial telephones, bathrobes and cable/satellite television - the interior has a rather old-worldly feel to it, with its rich cherrywood furniture and sumptuous floor-length curtains. The friendly staff are happy to arrange transport to the airport and babysitting, and there are also private fishing rights and diving facilities, plus a sunbed and a free car park.
