Livorno (or 'Leghorn' as it was long known to English visitors) is an ancient port on Tuscany's Tyrrhenian coast. From here one can gaze out over the blue waters to the Tuscan archipelago of Elba and its sister islands, to Corsica and Sardinia beyond. A fishing village until Medieval times, it was developed into a major port under Bernardo Buontalenti, with a team of Venetian artisans - the New Venice district of town still retains its network of canals, narrow lanes and bridges, and is well worth a look. Nearby sights include the Sanctuary of Montenero, back up in the hills, and the Tuscan art cities of Pisa, Florence, Siena and Lucca.
