Grand Hotel Tiziano e dei Congressi, Lecce
In a quiet, residential area a few minutes walk from the downtown area of Lecce, the Grand Hotel Tiziano e dei Congressi sits on Viale Porto d'Europa - modern accommodation perfect for making the best of this superb historic city. The hotel boasts 273 guest rooms, a mix of Classic and Superior, and has 12 conference rooms, seating up to 850 delegates. There is a restaurant, ballroom, outdoor swimming pool, American bar, garage and parking - even free bicycles for use of guests.
Each room has radio, minibar, bathroom with bathtub and shower, phone, air conditioning and television. There are non-smoking rooms available, facilities for guests with disabilities, internet connection, and extra beds can be put in rooms to accommodate the children.
Lecce itself is a delightful Baroque town, sitting at the head of the Salentine Peninsula which forms the spur of Italy (and the southerly part of the entrancing region of Puglia). The city was largely rebuilt in the 1500s, as the various religious orders commissioned ornate new churches and palazzi, with Lecce's stonemasons working marvels with the soft local sandstone. A wealth of historic buildings remain, with the Basilica di Santa Croce, the Church of Santa Chiara, Santa Irene and the 12th century Duomo (cathedral) among the highlights.
Head out from Lecce and you find a delightful Adriatic coastline of rugged cliffs, hidden sandy beaches, rocky coves and ruined watchtowers. The hinterland of this part of Puglia is a delight too, rather like Greece in its flora and architecture, with the traditional white trulli houses.
