Hotel Acquaverde, Genoa
In the heart of Genoa, the Hotel Acquaverde is in Via Balbi, on the top three floors of a late 17th century building (once an aristocrat's palazzo). Many remnants of its past splendour remain, with Baroque frescoes on the ceilings of some of the rooms. With its central position, this has become a popular hotel with business visitors to the city, as well as those working and studying at the nearby University.
The young owners of this Genoa hotel have spent ten years improving, consolidating and developing the services here. There are single, double, triple and quadruple rooms, each with bathroom with shower, minibar, phone, TV and air conditioning. The Hotel Acquaverde has WiFi internet access, 24-hour front desk, non-smoking rooms, restaurant, bar and rooms for guests with disabilities. You'll find the hotel perfectly placed for exploring historic Genoa and its sights. Via Balbi itself is home to the Museum of the Royal Palace, the Churches of St Victor and St Charles, Palazzo Durazzo Pallavicini and (in Piazza Nunziata) the Palazzo Belimbau.
Genoa has a long and fascinating history, as one of the great imperial sea powers of medieval Europe, its possessions stretching throughout the Mediterranean. This fascinating and cosmopolitan port became distinctly scruffy during the latter years of the 20th century, but a marvellous renaissance has taken place, with a vigorous regeneration keeping all of the best elements of the old, with the Old Town of Genoa/Genova radiating out from the port in a confusion of picturesque alleyways.
