Hotel Ai Due Fanali, Venice
Santa Croce 946, VeniceConveniently located in the heart of Sestiere di S. Croce (one of the six areas that comprise ancient Venice), the Hotel Ai Due Fanali offers terrific access to the sights of 'La Serenissima'. This quarter was once a centre for the working of wool and other crafts key to the city republic's economy. Those trades are gone now, and Santa Croce today is a strategically excellent point for those wanting to discover this marvellous city. Close to the railway station at Santa Lucia and the Piazzale Roma car park, it is also within walking distance of many of the major sights.
And the Hotel ai due Fanali itself is an historic gem. This Venice hotel was originally built around the year 967AD, close to the church of St Simon the Prophet. It was first a wooden oratory, used by gardeners and fishermen, before being rebuilt in stone. The interior of this former religious building boasts paintings by Jacopo Palma the younger, one of the most important of sixteenth-century mannerist painters.
This Venetian hotel has both rooms and apartments. Apartments measure 50 square metres, with double bedroom, living room with sofa bed, and a kitchenette. Bathrooms have showers or whirlpool baths, and the apartments have television, safe, phone, air conditioning ... and all set in elegant 18th century Venetian style. Rooms, meanwhile, are on three floors overlooking the Campo San Simeon Grande and the Grand Canal. They have bathrooms in Carrara marble - a most luxurious way to stay in Venice.
