Hotel Ala d'Oro, near Ravenna
Hotel Ala d'Oro offers four-star comfort in the 'centro storico' of Lugo - an historic town lying between Ravenna and Bologna. The town was once a possession of the Dukes of Este, who ruled much of the modern region of Emilia-Romagna during Renaissance times. The fine old building in which the Hotel Ala d'Oro sits, set on the town's Corso Matteoti, was itself once home to the Conti Rossi clan, one of Lugo's most important aristocratic families.
This Lugo hotel has 40 peaceful rooms, with all the modern comforts. Accommodation is single, double or triple, all rooms having air conditioning, bathroom with shower, direct phone, TV with movie channel and cable/satellite connection, direct modem link, desk and lamp, and breakfast provided. There is a 24-hour front desk, restaurant (featured in a number of good food guides), lounge bar, free car park and meeting facilities with internet access.
As well as providing good access to historic Ravenna and the nearby Adriatic coast, Lugo has a number of historic sights of its own to see. These include the Rocca Estense (the Este Castle), a massive hulk dating from the 16th century, and now serving as the town hall. There are two interesting churches in the Collegiata and San Francesco di Paola. History buffs may note that this was the sight of a major battle between Florence and Milan in 1424. More recently, Lugo was the frontline between Allied and German troops in the latter days of World War II and suffered extensive damage. This Lugo accommodation is well located for Bologna airport, also for the beautiful countryside of Emilia-Romagna region, which stretches north from here.
