Hotel Arcadia, Venice
A two-star hotel in Venice in a delightful part of the city, between the station and the Rialto Bridge. The Hotel Arcadia is housed within a building dating back to the 1600s. For centuries, this was the Venice home of an aristocratic Roman family. In the 1950s, the building was purchased by the Spolaore family, who transformed the old palazzo into a comfortable hotel, while keeping the unique ambience of a Venetian home.
This delightful, historic palazzo has exposed beams and is beautifully furnished - and of course it is suffused with the friendly atmosphere and attention to detail that comes with a family-run hotel. The rooms here are spacious, light and welcoming, a choice of double, triple or quadruple. All are centrally heated, with in-room safe, hairdryer, bathroom with shower and WC, phone, desk and lamp and colour TV. Breakfast is included. The hotel has a 24-hour front desk with safety deposit boxes.
This accommodation is in Cannaregio, the northernmost 'sestiere' (district, literally 'sixth') of Venice (Venezia), and which is bounded by the Canal Grande (Grand Canal) to the south. The Cannaregio Canal gives the district its name - before the building of the railway line into Venice, it was the main route visitors used to enter the city. This is the second largest of Venice's sestieri, and developed from the eleventh century as the working class heart of the town. The area has many attractions, including the Ca' d'Oro, the Jewish Ghetto, the Sacca della Misericordia and historic churches such as Santa Maria Assunta. You'll find some excellent traditional restaurants and 'osterie' within easy reach.
