The four-star Hotel Arcobaleno is in Taureana di Palmi, on the sun-drenched western coast of Calabria, the 'toe' of Italy. Set in a lovely position amidst the green of the olive groves and 800 metres from the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian, Taureana di Palmi is a marvellous spot on the Costa Viola (the Violet Coast) a long, sweeping natural bay, with an expanse of golden sand. Lying 7km from the legendary peak of Mount S. Elia, this is a popular yet unspoiled tourist destination. Inland of here you have numerous Calabrian villages apparently untouched by the passing of the centuries.

Calabria has a unique and quite marvellous topography - you are never far from the western (Tyrrhenian) or eastern (Ionian) coast with their bustling resorts and deserted coves. And yet head inland a few miles and you are in one of Europe's most beautiful wildernesses, the superb mountainous interior of the Sila, Pollino and Aspromonte ranges. Much of the hinterland is protected national park, a habitat for endangered species and alternating between thick pinewoods and rugged exposed uplands.
