It leads into the hotel lobby, once the college hall but now transformed into a stylish reception area. This is a magnificent, bright space, with white columns soaring up to cobalt-blue vaulted ceilings. The Crystal Bar is located in an old chapel and retains many original features. And the fitness area has a sauna, steam bath and fully equipped gym. You descend glass stairs to the open-air courtyard, then up to your room - each floor colour keyed with coordinating corridors and rooms.

The hi-tech furnishings and bright colours stop at the door of each room, making way for wood and leather, with floors of parquet, and the headboards a hand-stitched patchwork of Florentine hide. The rooms have the most sophisticated facilities including a cordless keyboard for web surfing and satellite TV. Glass, metal and mosaic tiles pick up the colours of the corridor, while the bathrooms have a warm and comfortable bathrobe and bath set including body creams, bath foam, and subtly scented shampoo and balms.
