Hotel Athena, Spoleto - situated in the historical centre of ancient Spoleto, this lovely little hotel is a great way to discover this marvellous old Umbrian town. The hotel is in a quiet and shaded area, and has 15 rooms, two of them specifically for guests with disabilities. Each room has private bathroom, minibar, television and air conditioning. Lovely hilltop Spoleto can lay claim to being one of Italy's prettiest and most charming towns. Almost exclusively medieval in its fabric, the city, sitting on a foothill of the Apennine Mountains in Umbria's Perugia province. The town is very ancient, first settled by the Umbrii, then taken by the Romans, it managed to repulse the all-conquering Hannibal in 217BC. During the Middle Ages it became very powerful, hence the wealth of churches and palazzi that grace the town centre. Spoleto sits in lovely countryside but it also has some spectacular architecture, not least the Ponte delle Torri, a splendid 13th century aqueduct on Roman foundations. There is a Roman theatre and amphitheatre, and the town is dominated by the massive fortress of the Rocca Albornoziana. Built in the 14th century it latterly became the city jail. For the last 15 years or so, Spoleto has become famous for its summer festival - the Spoleto Arts Symposium.

This lovely little hotel in Spoleto makes a great base from which to explore the town ... and the beauty of Umbria, the 'green heart of Italy'.
