Established as a monastery back in 1645, it became a religious retreat and, latterly, a luxury hotel. Just 19 rooms, all quiet and comfortable, all different - each with exposed wooden beams, stone walls, antique furniture and contemporary comforts. All have bathroom with bathtub, phone, TV and minibar. The hotel has a restaurant, bar and lovely gardens. There are no-smoking and soundproofed rooms and the front desk is open 24 hours a day. There are bikes for hire, babysitting and room service is available. Guests have use of an excellent fitness centre only 5km from here.

The swimming pool, sitting on a natural terrace, gives superb views of the town below - a great place to relax, take a drink or read a book. And in summer time, the tiny courtyard and ancient loggia become an open-air restaurant - with its own spectacular vista on the valley below. Not many vantage points look down on lofty hilltop Arezzo, but standing a full 650 metres above sea level you'll feel you're halfway to heaven.
