This elegant hotel in Rome lies just a ten-minute walk from many of the city's most celebrated sights - the Roman Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the legendary Trevi fountain. The Via Nazionale and the Teatro dell'Opera (Opera House) is just a short distance from here, and the Termini railway station and underground/subway stop are also within easy walking distance. Hotel Britannia is housed in a charming Art Nouveau building and has a lovely, refined old-world ambience. Guests are assured of attentive, careful service and the utmost in four-star comfort, with delicate classical furnishings and some beautifully restored original architectural details. A flight of red-carpeted stairs leads downwards from street-level to a marble-floored reception area with cherry wood fixtures and fittings. Tasteful decorations on the walls include 18th-century gilt-framed mirrors, neo-classical botanical frescoes and antique equestrian prints. The overall impression is of a handsome turn-of-the-century family home.

There are 33 supremely comfortable, soundproofed rooms, all individually decorated in warm, autumnal colours and furnished with carefully selected antiques, tasteful prints and elegant mirrors. Windows are dressed with sumptuous floor-length curtains or drapes and an aquarium of colourful, tropical fish in each room provides a relaxing focal point. Bathrooms have marble-tiled floors, with both shower and bath (some rooms have Jacuzzi-style whirlpool baths) plus a fitted hairdryer, a complimentary beauty kit and tanning lamp, and rooms themselves are equipped with direct-dial telephone, colour satellite television, internet access, radio/alarm and a minibar. A buffet breakfast is served in the light-filled breakfast room where guests are offered cold meats, pastries and delicious Italian coffee in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Upon their arrival, guests are offered a welcome drink and there is free parking for a limited number of cars at the hotel or alternatively guests can use the pay-parking garage which lies just 50 metres from the hotel. On reception, guests will find an internet point, a daily newspaper and fax service, laundry and dry cleaning facilities and a travel reservation service. Friendly, efficient staff are on hand 24 hours a day and the hotel offers a useful babysitting service for families travelling with young children. Although there is no restaurant here, there are plenty of places to eat in the local neighbourhood.
