Hotel Brixellum, Brescello
Via Cavallotti, 58, BrescelloThe Hotel Brixellum in Brescello - an elegant three star hotel close to Bologna yet in lovely northern Italian countryside. Rooms here are doubles or single use thereof - all with phone, bathroom, TV, minibar and air conditioning. The restaurant at this Brescello hotel offers local and international cuisine.
The little town of Brescello lies a few miles north east of Parma, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. The towns in this area are impossibly ancient, and were taken over and renamed by the Romans, who displaced tribes such as the Tyrrhenians, Thessalians and Umbrians who had already settled here. Our town became the Roman 'Brixellum' and has a couple of essential visits, in the Roman Antiquarium (which is within the former Benedictine monastery), and Hercules' Statue (sculpted in 1553 for Ercole d'Este by Jacopo Sansovino). This Brescello hotel is situated in one of the most historically important regions of Europe.
The Este name crops up time and again in the history of this Emilia-Romagna region, as the Dukes of Este ruled this whole area of northern Italy during the medieval period. Head 25km to the south east to explore Reggio Emilia, which has a wealth of historic treasures, including the Cathedral, the 10th century Basilica di San Prospero and the Baroque Basilica della Ghiara (1597). The Emilia countryside is lovely, and this is a paradise for gourmands too, with the cuisine rated the finest in Italy, as well as the richest, and with excellent wines too. Good food, beautiful countryside and high culture ... this Brescello hotel has it all.
