Hotel Bue Marino, Cala Gonone
A 3-star hotel on Sardinia's eastern coast - the Hotel Bue Marino, Cala Gonone occupies a beautifully panoramic position just a short distance from the main beach and tourist marina. From here there are daily boat trips out to the caves and the superb beaches of the Golfo di Orosei.
This Sardinia (Sardegna) hotel was built in 1959, and takes its name from a cave inhabited by the Monk Seal (christened 'Bue Marino' or 'sea ox' by the local fishermen). The hotel opened again for business in July 2004, after a major overhaul and refurbishment, which enhances its modern, spacious design and really brings comfort to the customer. There are 31 rooms and two junior suites, many of which look out onto the blue waters of the Mediterranean. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar, room safe and phone. Some have showers and hydro-massage bath tubs.
A scenic lift/elevator carries you up from the terrace restaurant, and you get a superb panorama of the whole gulf. Local produce features heavily on the menu of course, with lots of fresh fish and seafood, a good wine list and delicious local desserts. On the terrace you'll find the cocktail bar (great views again) which leads through to the sundeck with its hydro-massage tub.
There's a huge amount to see on and around Sardinia, and there are plenty of organised activities to help you make the most of the island: mini cruises of the Gulf; SUV expeditions to Gorropu (the deepest canyon in Europe); treks to the ancient Nuraghic (prehistoric) settlement at Tiscali; bus tours in search of Sardegna's cultural and archaeological heritage.
