In Classical times, Agrigento (or Akragas) was a capital of Greece: the Temple of Hercules and the rest, many of them very well preserved, make a fascinating excursion. Also be sure to investigate the Museo Nazionale Archeologico and the Hellenistic-Roman quarter, with houses from the fifth century AD.
