The town has the National Museum and the Communal Gallery, with some excellent Renaissance works. Also see the defensive Rocca Brancaleone, raised by the Venetians in 1457 to protect the town from invasion. Ancient Ravenna was once a seaport, but the Adriatic has receded down the centuries.
