Cannaregio forms the north-western point of Venice, and is conveniently close to the rail station that brings most visitors into the city (before the railway was built, Cannaregio Canal was the entrance into Venice). This part of town dates back a thousand years or so, and nearby sights include the Ghetto (Europe's original Jewish ghetto, and which gave the word to the language), the Chiesa dei Frari, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Ca' Foscari university quarter.

From here, most visitors will be happy to walk to Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square with its magnificent Basilica). Walking Venice is a delight in itself and your route is a network of narrow calli (streets) with local shops, restaurants and bars. Just 200 metres from the hotel, you'll find the vaporetti (water taxi) stop. This is a superb way to arrive at San Marco, with the public boats taking you along the Grand Canal to the square in 15 minutes.
