Close to the seafront in Lipari town, the Hotel Carasco is peacefully situated with marvellous views of the bay and the ancient Castello, the fortress that for centuries guarded Lipari against the constant threat of foreign invasion. Nearby too is the central square of Marina Corta.

Lipari is the largest of the seven main Aeolian islands (there are a number of smaller, uninhabited rocks) and it's a very special place. Set off the northern coast of Sicily, the islands were thrust up from the sea bed along the same volcanic fault line that created Mount Etna on Sicily and Mount Vesuvius near Naples on the Italian mainland. Though the Aeolians (with the exception of the continually active Stromboli) are largely dormant now, the legacy is a beautiful and very fertile landscape.

Lipari is a charming old town, with the Castello and a thriving local port. Hiking or cycling is a great way to see the island, though buses run around it (Lipari is just 4km or so from tip to toe). Scale the high point of Quattrocchi (four eyes) which gives super views over the sea to Vulcano. The Roman baths at Calogero are a must-see as is the village of Pianoconte.
