Hotel Carlos V, Alghero
Hotel Carlos V, Alghero - lying on the Lungomare Valencia, just 50 metres from Alghero's gorgeous bay, this five-star hotel offers a sumptuous way to enjoy the Sardinian town.
Somehow popularity hasn't managed to spoil Alghero. A thriving tourist town, especially popular with the British, this town on Sardinia's central/north west coast has survived as a thriving fishing port, and also has a wealth of historic delights. Sardinia is a very un-Italian corner of Italy, and the influences on Alghero are heavily Hispanic, with the invasion of the town by the Catalan army of Pedro IV of Aragon in 1354. Indeed, the town became known as Barcelonetta or 'little Barcelona'.
And once out of town you'll find a lovely coast road south of Alghero, leading to little medieval Bosa. See Neptune's Grotto, and there is a large Marine Reserve with good diving, and a multitude of things to do include climbing, caving, bird watching, mountain biking, exploring the plentiful Roman and Greek ruins, even hunting if that's to your taste. Alghero has an international airport with direct flights to the UK from Ryanair.
Every room at this Alghero hotel has a balcony overlooking either the gardens or the Mediterranean. The bar has panoramic views, there is the excellent Imperial buffet restaurant, and a terrific breakfast is served each morning. Rooms have minibar, pay TV, bathroom, safe, bathrobe and slippers, work desk, air conditioning and a telephone.
