Hotel Carmine, Marsala
This cosy and atmospheric three-star hotel is right in the historic centre of Marsala, on the western coast of Sicily, still a thriving port and home of the famous wine industry. Converted from a 17th-century convent in 2005, the exterior of the Hotel Carmine is stunning, particularly when lit up at night. It is located in one of Marsala's most famous squares, next to the monastery of the Convento del Carmine, where art exhibitions are held. Marsala itself has a rich history - many of the evocative wine baglios (warehouses) on the quay were once owned by the British in Sicily, who played a prominent part in the industry. The Florio-Cinzano premises contain an interesting museum. Wine apart, the cathedral is worth a visit for its Gagini sculptures - surprisingly the church is dedicated to Thomas a Becket. Next to Marsala itself are the ruins of the ancient city of Lilybaeum, founded by the Carthaginians - the ruins of a bath house and some well-preserved mosaics remain.
The Hotel Carmine has 28 air-conditioned rooms, individually decorated with antique Sicilian furnishings. They make the most of the original architecture, which has been beautifully restored, but also feature modern bathrooms (bathrobes are provided) and state-of-the-art technology, such as cable/satellite television and modem links. English breakfast is served. Outside, a courtyard with a palm tree is a pleasant place to relax in warm weather, and there is a garden and outdoor play area for children. Massages can be arranged, while a multi-media conference centre provides up-to-date business facilities. Mooring facilities are also provided for those with boats, and transport to the airport can be arranged.
