The Relais del Castello di Oviglio sits in the beautiful countryside of Piedmont. The castle has only been partly renovated, leaving its partly tumbledown status charmingly intact. Yet within, the rooms have been superbly modernised and designed to offer the best in contemporary four-star comfort. You may find it hard to tear yourself away from this superb Piedmont hotel in a castle, but the local area is a delight. The historic area of Monferrato, a margravate of the Holy Roman Empire in the early Middle Ages, is a fertile and beautiful patchwork of fields and meadows and rolling hills, rising eventually to meet the Apennine mountains and Liguria. Towns include Acqui Terme, Alba, Asti and Nizza Monferrato. One must-see is the Sacro Monte di Crea (the Sacred Mountain of Crea), one of the nine Roman Catholic shrines protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This hotel in Monferrato makes a great base for exploring this lovely part of Italy.
