This attractive hilltop hotel in Montalcino is immersed in the glorious Tuscan countryside, surrounded by pretty olive groves and vineyards. Until recently, the Castello - a 10th-century fortress - was in ruins. A renowned architect was commissioned to restore it and transform it into a luxurious modern hotel. The conversion was cleverly executed and the 4-star Hotel Castello Di Velona, Montalcino retains a wealth of original features, including an imposing 12th-century watchtower, while offering comfortable, modern accommodation.

There are 24 beautifully presented, light-filled rooms, all with well-appointed en-suite bathroom facilities plus direct-dial telephone, refrigerated minibar and air conditioning. Tasteful furnishings complement the original structure of the building and evoke a traditional Tuscan feel with hand-painted decorations, carefully chosen antiques and sumptuous fabrics. Every room has views over the Tuscan countryside and suites have an additional phone and satellite television.

Typical regional Italian cuisine is served in the restaurant, which leads out into the garden (where guests can dine under the shade of ancient olives and cypress tree) during the summer months. During the cooler months, the restaurant's enormous log fire is lit to provide warmth and a cosy atmosphere. Pets are welcome at this Chianti hotel and children under the age of two stay free of charge, with a special reduced tariff for two to 12-year-olds.
