The key local sights are of course those 'ville venete', the antique houses of the Venetian nobility, built as country retreats when the Serene Republic was in its pomp. The doyen of architects for these houses was Andrea Palladio, who during the sixteenth century invented an entirely new order of architecture, when he drew on Classical forms to create Palladianism, which was to redirect the course of early modern architecture (think the White House or Buckingham Palace). Brenta was home ground for Palladio, and many followed: today there are some one hundred villas still standing between Padua and Venice.
