The centre of Pisa is a treasure house for anyone who wants to understand early medieval Italy and Europe. The cluster of fine buildings that form the 'centro storico' (of which the famed Leaning Tower is just one) were all constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries, and there are marvels here. The Torre Pendente di Pisa tends to overshadow all of course, but it's just one piece of the 'Campo dei Miracoli', the 'field of miracles' clustered around Pisa's Cathedral Square. There is the magnificent cathedral (il Duomo) itself, a magnificent exercise in Pisan Romanesque architecture, with the huge bronze doors of the Portale di San Ranieri. There is the circular Baptistery and the Camposanto - often called the most beautiful cemetery in Christendom. Heading out from the Campo we have a jumble of little medieval back streets, fine medieval churches, the very old and very good Botanic Gardens (Orto Botanico), and fine museums including the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale. and travel along the River Arno, which bisects the city, to the vast 16th century Arsenale.
This Pisa hotel serves a traditional Italian breakfast, and makes for comfortable, functional and affordable accommodation in the heart of Pisa.
