Hotel Centrale, Marsala
This family-run two-star hotel is conveniently located in the historic centre of Marsala, in the province of Trapani. This thriving port is on the western coast of Sicily, and is the home of the famous wine industry, started by an Englishman, John Woodhouse, in 1796, after he had developed a similar drink - port - in Portugal. Today, you can visit the wine baglios (warehouses) on the quay, and taste the rich, sweet wine, which is also used in some memorable desserts. The wineries sell direct to the public at reasonable prices.
The Hotel Centrale is perfectly located for exploring this atmospheric city, and today its historic heart, marked by an eagle cresting the town gate, is reserved for pedestrians. It certainly makes for a nice change from dodging the Fiats and Vespas of so many Italian city centres. The older streets of Marsala have a charming Baroque aspect, the locals are friendly, and there are many impressive churches to visit.
The Hotel Centrale has a mixture of comfortable double, triple and quadruple rooms, and all contain colour television, refrigerated minibars, telephones and safety deposit boxes. English breakfast is included in the room price, and there is a free car park. A pretty courtyard with potted plants adds a touch of Mediterranean atmosphere, while the friendly staff are delighted to advise you on an itinerary for a city walk, the location of the Punic, Roman, Arab and Norman remains in the area, the best local beach, or which restaurant to choose for delicious Sicilian specialities such as fish cous-cous or ricotta pudding.
