Hotel Clelia, Ustica Island, near Palermo
Via Sindaco I° 29, Isola Di Ustica (Palermo)The three-star Hotel Clelia is based on the volcanic Island of Ustica in a protected maritime area, 70 kilometres north of Palermo on Sicily. This was once a shelter for pirates. Completely renovated in 2003, the hotel is right in the historic centre of the town, just a few footsteps from the main town square, and offers 26 modern, comfortable rooms that all have air conditioning, colour satellite TV, a well-stocked mini bar, safe deposit box, direct dial phone, private shower and hairdryer. Some of the rooms also have balconies. There is a great in-hotel restaurant serving typical Sicilian dishes, specialising in wonderfully fresh seafood, plus a relaxing bar, and an internet point, as well as a TV lounge and a reading room. The friendly staff are happy to arrange itineraries for you - including diving, archaeological, historic or nature-oriented trips and activities - as well as scooter and boat hire.
The snorkeling here is also excellent, as there are so many species of fish and other sea creatures. You can also go for an archaeological dive if you fancy it, to see ancient jars and anchors on the sea bed. Also take time to enjoy exploring the many pretty coves and beautiful caves of the island, wander the streets of the town with its narrow alleyways, attractive murals on the houses, and local produce on display on classic straw chairs. The hotel also has a number of holiday houses, sleeping between two and four people, some in the historic town centre, and some with Mediterranean gardens and panoramic sea views.
