Bari, the second largest city in southern Italy, is a fantastic place from which to explore the Puglia region's many sights of interest ... and it holds a lot interest in its own right. Badly hit by the air raids of World War II, Bari is a city with two distinct parts, the old and the new. The port in the old town offers ferries to Greece and Croatia, whilst the winding, labyrinthine streets provide possibly the most confusing place to walk in southern Italy! The new part is largely mad up of shops and offices but also has some lovely markets and restaurants.

Stretching south, the Adriatic coast boasts many beautiful beaches whilst the landscape is mainly agricultural - the fertile flat wheatfields a reminder of the predominance of pasta in this part of the world. Perhaps the most extraordinary of all Puglia's castles, and maybe all its landmarks, is the Castel de Monte, just 17km south of Bari. Built by Frederick in the 1240s, the castle is a high, isolated fortress precisely built around an octagonal courtyard in two storeys of eight rooms. The mathematical precision involved in its construction and the preoccupation with the number eight all lend an air of mystery and intrigue that has not lessened over the centuries.
