Hotel Conteverde, near Reggio Emilia
Strada Per Barco, Montecchio EmiliaHotel Conteverde is in the Emilia-Romagna town of Montecchio Emilia, south of the Via Emilia and roughly equidistant between the cities of Reggio Emilia (15km) and Parma (17km). Montecchio is the chief town of the Val d'Enza (valley). This modern hotel lies in its own gardens, and has 55 elegantly appointed bedrooms, with all the modern comforts and state of the art technology. Rooms have private bathrooms, are air conditioned with minibar and safe. All have TV, phone and radio. There is a TV lounge, restaurant and 24-hour room service, and lift/elevator access to all floors. Rooms are wheelchair accessible, contain hairdryers and there is porterage available.
Montecchio is a pretty, green area and you have those historic cities on your doorstep. Parma is famous for its cuisine of course (as is all Emilia-Romagna), with Parma ham and Parmesan cheese being complemented by superb pastas, and a seasonally various cuisine based around mushrooms, pumpkins, spinach, chestnuts, pork, rich cream sauces and ragus, superb sausages and olive oil. Emilia and Romagna both produce superb, though very distinct wines.
Parma has historical riches aplenty, with the Romanesque cathedral with its 16th century fresco by Correggio, the Baptistery, the Teatro Farnese and many others. Reggio Emilia too has its Gothic-Romanesque cathedral, two basilicas, fine churches and a clutch of fascinating museums and galleries. Or head further afield to red-brick Bologna, the gastronomic capital of this most food-conscious of regions.
