Hotel Continentale, Arezzo
The Continental Hotel has, for more than half a century, been the point of reference for anyone wanting to stay in the delightful Tuscan hill town of Arezzo. And with a recent refurbishment, both inside and out, this Arezzo hotel now adds the latest contemporary comforts to its strong reputation for service. With 73 rooms, three deluxe suites, three conference rooms, spacious drawing rooms, a lobby bar and a capacious breakfast room, this is a marvellously accommodating hotel, whether you're in Arezzo on business or pleasure.
But the biggest deal is your location right in the heart of Arezzo, on Piazza Guido Monaco. This lovely hill town tumbles down the steep hillside, overlooking four valleys, the Tiberina, Valdarno, Valdichiana and Casentino, all clad (in typically Tuscan style) in vineyards. The main street, Via del Corso, scales the hill to the oldest part of town, where you'll find the main square of the Piazza Grande, the Duomo, Palazzo Vasari and a host of important churches and museums. The prize is the church of Santa Maria della Pieve, with its fresco cycle by Piero della Francesca. There is the Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art, the Medieval Museum, Petrarch's House (another native of the city), and you'll also discover excellent shops, restaurants, cafes and gelaterias.
This is also the home town of Roberto Benigni, who filmed his Oscar-winning La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful) in the city. July sees Abruzzo Wave, a festival of music, literature and film, while August-September sees the Giostra Saraceno, a breathtaking medieval joust - there could hardly be a more perfect backdrop than medieval Arezzo.
