Pienza is a marvellous town, and quite unique, being conceived and built as a 'model new town' during the Renaissance. It was the brainchild of Pope Pius II, who used the site of his home village, Corsignano in Tuscany's Siena province, as the foundation for his experiment. The poor boy from the provinces, one of a family of 18 children, transformed lawless and chaotic Corsignano into a little 'city' (though to this day is has no more than 2500 inhabitants), building a Duomo (cathedral) and encouraging his cardinals to build homes here too. Thus Pienza has a Palazzo Borgia, now home to the town museum. You may recognise Pienza as the 'set' for Franco Zeffirelli's film of 'Romeo and Juliet'.
