Bari, the second largest city in southern Italy, has a rich cultural and historical past. Under Norman rule, Bari rivalled Venice, both as a maritime centre and as a place of pilgrimage. Largely ignored for years, its fortunes were restored under Mussolini, who built the university; other fascist-inspired architecture is still evident although Bari suffered hugely during the air raids of the Second World War. Perhaps the most interesting sights are to be found in the winding streets of the old town. Here, amidst the labyrinthine network of houses and narrow, intersecting streets, sits the Basilica di San Nicola, and close by is Bari's other important church, the Cattedrale di San Sabino.
