Titian, Giovanni Bellini, Pisanello and Piero della Francesca were all resident painters here; there were court poets including Tasso and Guarini; and most of all Ferrara was a centre of music, with the greatest composers and musicians of the day coming to work for the Este family. The legacy is an unrivalled collection of early Renaissance palaces, including the Palazzo Municipio, the monumental Castello Estense (home to the Dukes), a fine cathedral, many good Gothic and Renaissance churches and much other excellent public and private architecture.
