A terrific position in the centre of town for this hotel in Agrigento, the Hotel Del Viale lies close to the main street of the Via Atenea and to Viale della Vittoria. This tree-lined avenue makes a perfect vantage point for observing the Valley of the Temples (or Valle dei Templi) beneath. This is, after all, the main reason people visit this delightful town on Sicily's southern coast. A capital of Magna Grecia (Greater Greece) in pre-Christian times, ancient Arkagas was once one of the most powerful and important cities in Western Civilisation. Today, the Valley is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

You can wander for hours among the relics, many of the ancient temples being surprisingly well preserved. But don't overlook Agrigento itself, a delightful medieval town (the ancient Sicilians retreated up the cliffs to avoid the depredations of marauding Saracen and Berber pirates) it has some fine old squares, shabbily charming old palazzi and tiny stepped streets. There are fine churches, and a good museum. But most spectacular is the night view over the floodlit valley and harbour.
