Hotel delle Palme, Marsala
This luxurious four-star hotel on Sicily has been converted from a magnificent 19th-century villa on the outskirts of Marsala. It boasts wonderful views of the Stagnone lagoon and the tiny island of Mozia, once the home of a Phoenician colony. The Hotel delle Palme would make the perfect base for a trip to the island - it boasts a remarkable museum and the ruins of a great civilisation, complete with harbour and cemetery. The hotel is also well-placed for exploring the peaceful hill town of Erice (just 30 km away), a place that has been called the Assisi of the south with its winding cobbled alleys and tiny provincial palaces. The ancient sites of Segesta, with its spectacular open-air theatre, and Selinunte (the ancient Greek city of Selinus, with the evocative remains of no fewer than eight temples) are also not too far away at 35km.
With its impressive entrance adorned with ornate metal curlicues, the Hotel delle Palme exudes class. It has a mixture of double, triple and quadruple rooms (plus a suite), all of which are soundproofed, air-conditioned and non-smoking. En-suite marble bathrooms contain hydro-massage showers and hairdryers, and the rooms feature satellite television, direct-dial telephones, refrigerated minibars, safety deposit boxes and high-speed internet access. Rooms with views and balconies are available on request, as are cots. For breakfast, there is a huge buffet and the restaurant serves a delicious selection of fine Sicilian cuisine. There is a free car park, and transport to and from the airport can be arranged by the always-professional staff.
