Hotel dello Stretto, Messina
The Jolly Hotel Dello Stretto, Messina is an imposing four-star hotel right on the harbourside in downtown Messina, Sicily. This large hotel has 95 reasonably-priced rooms, each equipped with air conditioning, hairdryer and mini-bar, and decorated in a clean and modern style. The hotel has its own restaurant and bar, where guests can relax in the evenings without having to venture out if they don't wish to. There is also a 24-hour reception, where friendly staff can assist with laundry services or giving advice on how best to spend your time in the lovely Messina province of Sicily.
Messina is a fascinating town, and the place where Claudio, Hero, Benedick and Beatrice all fall in love in Shakespeare's comedy 'Much Ado About Nothing'; it's also the scene of less cheerful events in the tragedy 'Anthony and Cleopatra'. Messina was almost destroyed in 1908 when an earthquake and tsunami killed 60,000 people, but it was soon rebuilt to an improved city design. The city's proudest monument is the Fountain of Orion, sculpted by one of Michelangelo's own pupils, Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, in 1553. Using the city of Messina as a base, visitors can easily access the nearby Peloritani mountains or Alcantara Gorges to go hiking (or gently strolling!) and enjoy the landscape. Mount Etna, Taormina and eastern Sicily's other places of interest are also within easy reach by car from this hotel in Messina, and the railway station is only a short walk from the Hotel Dello Stretto's doors.
