One of Italy's most popular tourist attractions, the 65-hectare archaeological site created from the volcanic ash from the eruption in 79AD offers visitors a remarkable insight into everyday life in ancient Roman times. Chariot tracks are still clearly visible on the ancient cobbled roads and exquisitely preserved colourful wall paintings bear witness to the vibrant culture of Roman times.
