Hotel Domu Incantada is in Muravera, on the eastern coast of Sardinia, some 45km north-east of Cagliari. Set within a century-old orange grove, this accommodation has been created within a typical southern Sardinian house - this is a terrific mixture of contemporary architecture and design, with traditional hospitality. You are just a few minutes away from the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean here, with beautiful sandy beaches and plenty to keep everyone occupied. You may spend days just lazing in the sun, but there's lovely countryside to explore too, either on foot or on bike. And each evening, after a long day's sightseeing, you can return to the best in traditional Sardinian cuisine, before watching the spectacular sunset from the terrace.

This Sardinian hotel has just 16 rooms, each with air conditioning, minibar, bathroom with shower and toilet, television and phone. Rooms are singles right up to quadruple, and you can take B&B or half-board accommodation. There is family accommodation, the whole hotel is non-smoking, there is a playground for the kids, billiards table, and barbecue facilities. You'll find plenty of free parking and facilities for guests with limited mobility. The hotel has meeting and banqueting facilities. Dry cleaning, car and cycle rental, babysitting, laundry and ironing can all be arranged.

And you must head out of the hotel and explore Sardinia. This fascinating island, which lies closer to Tunisia than to the Italian mainland, is distinctively different from mainstream Italy. DH Lawrence came here in the 1920s and described the island as 'lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere'. With extraordinary neolithic remains, and relics from the countless invaders (Normans, Saracens, Spanish and Greek to name but a few) it's a constant source of surprise and delight.
