Favaro Veneto is just outside Mestre, an historic city (and a frazione of the comune of Venice) with sights to see including the Palazzo da Re, the Torre dell'Orologio, the Palazzo Podestarile and the Provvedaria. This is the mainland departure point for visitors to Venice - the Ponte della Liberta (or Freedom Bridge) runs across the Lagoon from here, ferrying road and rail passengers to the islands of Venice. A town born in legend, the stories have it that Mestre was created by Mesthles, a fugitive from Troy. Certainly it had a Roman fortress, and in the Middle Ages was fought over by the rival powers of Venice and Verona.

Today, it makes a great base for visitors wanting easy access both to Venice itself, the airport and the cities of the mainland - Mestre is conveniently reachable from Padua (Padova), Verona, Vicenza and Treviso.
