Hotel Duomo, Siena
Via Stalloreggi, 38, SienaThe Hotel Duomo, Siena - this lovely building is a converted twelfth century mansion in the heart of the city. Lying near to the cathedral (Il Duomo) and to the central square of the Piazza del Campo, this Siena hotel could scarcely be better positioned for seeing the sights. And as well as putting the best of medieval Siena on your doorstep, the hotel has spectacular views out of the city, onto the surrounding Sienese hills.
There is some history to this building. It was rebuilt on old foundations in 1726, with a facade created in the Renaissance style. From the terrace you look down onto the red roofs of Siena. This is complete relaxation, the urban sophistication and peace of a medieval Tuscan town and surrounded by perhaps Italy's most beautiful region - Tuscany. And yet none of the modern comforts are sacrificed here. The Hotel Duomo has just 20 rooms, all of them air conditioned, and each with private en suite bathroom with bath tub, telephone and television.
Best of all, historic Siena is on your doorstep. The front desk staff at your Siena hotel (with Italian, English, French and German speakers among them) will be happy to tell you what to see and how to get there. Step out onto Via Stalloreggi and you are within easy reach of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Torre del Mangia and of course the Campo and the Duomo itself. This superb church is one of the marvels of Italian Romanesque architecture, and within has frescoes by Ghirlandaio, bas reliefs by Donatello, Ghiberti and Jacopo della Quercia, and the famous Nicola Pisano pulpit.
