This secluded three-star hotel on the north-west coast of Sicily is perched on the outskirts of the beautiful hill town of Erice, which has been called the Assisi of the South. The Hotel Ermione, Erice, is 750 metres above sea level and offers breathtaking views over the sea with the Egadi islands glimpsed in the distance. At the Ermione, with its quiet atmosphere pervaded with the scent of pine trees, you will feel miles away from anywhere, but in fact it is just 700 metres from Erice - a delightful place of winding cobbled alleys and tiny provincial palazzos. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to the city, or you can take advantage of the private parking if you want to use your own car.

Slightly further afield is the bustling port of Trapani, an old city full of churches - perhaps the finest is the cathedral of San Lorenzo with its magnificent baroque architecture. Don't miss the Pepoli Museum, which features a large collection of decorative art, much of it made from local coral. From Trapani, there are regular hydrofoil services to the Egadi islands of Favignana (famous for its tuna fisherman, who enjoy a similar status to Spanish matadors), Levanzo and Marettimo.

The hotel offers a good mix of single, double and triple rooms, decorated in a modern style, with refrigerated minibars, direct-dial phones, bath/shower and WC. You are welcome to bring your pets.
