Hotel Europa, Ferrara
An historic hotel for this city rich in history, Ferrara's Hotel Europa was built as long ago as 1861 by the town's Signa family. In the 19th century it was a home to royalty - with the future kings of Italy and Spain (Umberto I and Amadeo di Savoia) among the guests. Later, Prince Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte and composer Giuseppe Verdi stayed here.
You don't have to have royal blood to stay here now of course, though that atmosphere of old world charm and style persists. Despite some damage from air raids back in World War II, this superb Ferrara hotel is remarkably unscathed by the years. A sympathetic and intelligent restoration has incorporated all the best of the new while maintaining all of the building's traditional style. Many bedrooms face the main street of the city, and you can relax in the frescoed drawing room suite, adorned with superb works of art (including a painting of Napoleon and Josephine, given by Bonaparte as a thank you for the hotel's hospitality).
The best of the new? Bedrooms are single through to quadruple and family rooms. All have minibar, well equipped bathrooms, slippers, wireless internet, wake up service and alarm clocks, phone, air conditioning, work desk, TV and hairdryer. Hotel Europa has meeting rooms of various sizes, equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment. There is free use of the WiFi internet connection, and delegates have private parking in the hotel grounds. You can hire bikes and there is a laundry and dry cleaning service. Best of all, you have historic Ferrara on your very doorstep.
