A couple of millennia ago, Reggio nell'Emilia was the Roman capital of northern Italy, and the city has a wealth of historical landmarks from down the centuries. The former 'Regium Lepidi' has its centro storico lain out in hexagonal form, the shape of the old town walls. Within are the marvellous Baroque Basilica della Ghiara (1597), the most important church of the city, and a number of other important historic churches. There are some fine palazzi, including the 13th century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the 15th century Palazzo Comunale and the 18th century Palazzo Ducale. All are close by this central Reggio Emilia hotel.

Reggio Emilia has some superb restaurants too, the cuisine of Emilia-Romagna region is justly renowned as the best and richest in Italy and, among much else, has given us Parma ham, Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar. The wines of the region are also excellent. Check out the galleries and museums of the city too. This was a hothouse of talent in Renaissance times, with sons of the city including Il Correggio and Lelio Orsi.
