Hotel Europa, Spoleto
Viale Trento E Trieste 201, SpoletoHotel Europa, Spoleto - a superbly positioned hotel for making the most of historic Spoleto, this accommodation is right in the centre of town and very close to the railway station, making it ideal for business and leisure travellers alike. It makes for a perfect base for exploring the city (and the many delights that lie in store as you head out to discover Umbria, long known as the 'green heart of Italy'). You can breakfast on the flower-decked terrace before heading out to find centuries of history, art and culture ... and some stunningly beautiful countryside.
Certainly one of Umbria's prettiest and most charming towns, Spoleto is best known for its major summer festival, but at any time of year is a delightful monument to the success of medieval Umbrian architecture. It has a very pretty hilltop setting, and some superb sights, including the Ponte delle Torri, a 13th century aqueduct, though dating in parts back to Roman times. As well as the lovely Duomo (cathedral) of Santa Maria Assunta, there are a number of fine churches, and imposing civic buildings such as the Rocca Albornoziana (14th century). Once the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, Spoleto has a host of important churches quite out of proportion to its modern size. There is the Roman theatre and amphitheatre too, and a clutch of fine medieval palazzi. And since 1992 there has been the festival - the Spoleto Arts Symposium bringing together programmes for opera, cooking, jazz, writing and more. This Spoleto hotel makes the perfect base for discovering it all.
