The Hotel Falterona overlooks the village square in Stia, one of Tuscany's prettiest villages. Set within a carefully restored fifteenth century building, the hotel now offers the perfect balance between antique architecture and contemporary comfort. Stia is in the Casentino Valley, around an hour from Florence, and a true delight to discover. The Alto Casentino (High Casentino) has numerous monasteries, castles, hermitages and fresh water springs - this is a land of mysticism, legend and incredible beauty. Nowhere is that more true than in the National Park of Casentino Forest, with the Sasso Fratino nature reserve. The River Arno rises on the slopes of Monte Falterona, and its streams flow down into the valley.

The border with Emilia-Romagna is just a little east of here, with the national park straddling the border. Some 30km south lies the historic town of Arezzo, with its medieval centre and magnificent fresco cycle by Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. To the west lies Florence, with countless historic treasures (must sees include Michelangelo's David, the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo). Historic Siena, the heart of beautiful Chianti and its superb wines, is to the south west.
