The Hotel Florida, Lerici has been run by the Castellanotti family for the past 30 years and provides excellent hospitality in an idyllic setting. It offers fantastic views out across the Golfo dei Poeti, which was once so popular with the likes of DH Lawrence, Shelley and Virginia Woolf.

The bustling resort of Lerici has a large number of high-quality restaurants and bars, many of which overlook the sea. It has a dramatic castle, which looms over the entrance to the Gulf, and is now home to the museum of palaeontology. From the Piazza Garibaldi, you can take a boat ride out to Portovenere, a picturesque town which sits astride a peninsula at the far end of the Gulf, and where you can visit the Church of San Lorenzo with its Syrian and Byzantine treasures preserved in the vestry. You can also take a boat trip to the Cinque Terre, further along the coastline to the east of Portovenere. These precarious cliffside settlements are extremely picturesque when viewed from the sea, and back on dry land, they are connected by a network of hiking trails.
